Date 5th November 2009.
My office is at Andheri MIDC, Mumbai (closed to seepz main gate).
Daily I take a bus from Mulund & get down at Seepz Main Gate bus stop, my office is at other side of road with two minutes of walk.
Unlike daily, my journey ended with surprise. Earlier when I used to get down from bus I hardly experienced direct sun light (even at 1.00 pm). Today it was different, my daily comfort of walking beneath huge two trees which covered few meters of road with cold air was no more.
All I found was, trees were cut at the ground level. These trees were on the road, ofcourse not inbetween but it was from LEFT 20% in. Or may be I should state, we humans are on their road, I can assume from the size of trees that they were 30-40 years old (I am not an expert, just an assumption).
The only thing that pinched me was I could not find any sign of efforts put to move those trees to some other location. I could see leaves and branches on road & footpath. Seems like it was cut into pieces and transported.
Although I am trying to point at authorities for not shifting trees, those trees were huge. But today we have machinery to take care of such a job. May be they are on cost cutting too.
So where are we ? are we saving trees ?
Often I have seen advertisement to save tree. World is talking about global warming, GREEN IT, Banks becoming GREEN. In organization people put quote beneath their email signature “Do not take print out unless necessary, save papers, save trees.” Banks, IT, Telecoms have cut use of papers, have started using energy efficient products. Now a days all electronic / electrical devices are designed considering energy saving.
We are unable to control pollution, traffic & transport. But we can save trees. If its necessary to cut down tree there should be enforced government policy to shift tree. I am not writing anything new, this is all conveyed before many times many ways.
I am sure nothing is going to change,
today will cut trees for human needs, tomorrow when AMERICA advice Indian politician to plant / save trees, they’ll oblige with all efforts.
