What is the advantage?
You’ll save time while installing from CD, booting to GUI will take almost double time. This comes handy while you are not giving try to Fedora OS & determine to install.

Followings will guide you starting Installer from CLI.

Boot computer with CD / USB to init 3.
On the Fedora Welcome screen, select BOOT option.
Press Tab
Type 3 at the end of the line & press enter.

Now Fedora Live CD will boot to init 3.
Login as root (no password required) or liveuser (with password liveuser)

Run following command as root.

/usr/sbin/anaconda –liveinst –method=livecd:///dev/mapper/live-osimg-min

Now you can complete Installation, you may not get option to custome partition.

Once after reboot, pc will start at init 3.

to change it to init 5, modify /etc/inittab from id:3:initdefault: to id:5:initdefault:
Also you’ll need to create user.

Why did I endup looking for this option?
I was trying to install Fedora LXDE on my old desktop, GUI installer wasn’t working, I got following error in message log.

But text based installation was never started, i had to run above command to install fedora.

To start server

Now you can access using http://x.x.x.x:8080/gui/

Even today Laptop manufacturer does not consider providing drivers for Linux OS.
While installing Fedora 13 on following laptops wifi was not working.

To install drivers either you find a device using lspci command, and google it for driver download. OR use message logs.

create new partition (partition id should be 8e Linux LVM)
ADD PHYSICAL VOLUME

pvcreate /dev/new_partition

Verify new physical volume

pvdisplay

Extend existing VOLUME GROUP

vgextend VolGroup00 /dev/xvda3

make sure vg free size is = new partition size using vgdisplay command
Extend existing LVM by adding new partition

lvextend /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 /dev/xvda3

make sure lv size is increased, use lvdisplay

RESIZE FILE SYSTEM
Reboot Linux to init1

umount /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
fsck -f /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00

Mount / partition or reboot to init1 for following command to run.

resize2fs /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00

Now you may reboot & check / partition size.

If you are using Linux machine for routine work, and because of xenserver if you need to connect windows machine / reboot to windows, you may get annoyed. Citrix should have provided XenCenter for Linux.

Anyways, this is where OpenXenManager works.
OpenXenManager (aka OpenXenCenter) is a client application to connect to the XenServer Host through the network. OpenXenManager is a open source clone of Citrix’s XenServer XenCenter. OpenXenManager is written in python with pygtk and a and gtk-vnc (or vncviewer). You can monitor your virtual machines, access virtual machine consoles, perform allowed operations (start, stop, suspend, reboot…), create virtual machines, and more.

e.g by mistake I deleted /bin/ls
now I can not work without ls as I have habit to run ls after I change folder. so how do I recover /bin/ls ?

I need to have rpm2cpio, this is bundled with rpm-x.x.x…i386.rpm.

now I need to findout which rpm contains /bin/ls

yum whatprovides /bin/ls

coreutils-5.97-19.el5.i386.rpm contains /bin/ls in CentOS-5.3

now if i try to install using yum,

Package coreutils-5.97-19.el5.i386 already installed and latest version

To restore /bin/ls all I need is coreutils-5.97-19.el5.i386.rpm

rpm2cpio coreutils-5.97-19.el5.i386.rpm | cpio -idmv
cp bin/ls /bin/

this is all you need to restore specific command / file from rpm.
yes there is another way by forcefully installing rpm

rpm -ivh coreutils-5.97-19.el5.i386.rpm –force

this was just an example for ls, in case if you loose ls due to some hardware error / human error, you can keep work going by command dir.
