Upgrade Citrix XenServer using Rollling Pool Upgrade




With the every new release of citrix xenserver most of us usually upgrade using cd / usb, which may not be convenient with increased number of servers. Upgrade Citrix XenServer using Rollling Pool Upgrade is probably easiest way for any admin. You do not require any kind of cd / usb media, all you need is latest version of citrix xenserver iso.

Here we have used XenServer-6.0.201-install-cd.iso to upgrade old 5.6 & 6.0 installations.
You can extract iso image on nfs / http / ftp. We have used http.
192.168.3.20 is webserver used to mount xenserver iso.
e.g http://192.168.3.20/yum/xen/

Before going to next step, pl make sure you have taken VM & Host backup.

To begin Rollling Pool Upgrade using XenCenter.
First of all download & install latest XenCenter available.
Shut all running VM & disable VM startup on boot (for 5.6)

Click on tools –> Rollling Pool Upgrade…
Select Servers to upgrade.

Select Automatic Mode, as this allows to use http / nfs / ftp. Using manual mode you’ll be asked to insert cd / pxe path.

Select Automatic Mode

Click Next to go through prerequisite checks.

Here you can select source, we have used HTTP.
Don’t forget to Test before clicking Start Upgrade

With the completion of this step, all your selected servers will be running latest version of citrix xenserver.
