FC 13 / 12 Live CD boot error (no root device found) -Fix

no root device found.
booting has failed, sleeping forever.

Above is the error you may face with Fedora 12 / 13 Live CDs, this appears with specific hardware, Whereas same Live cd / usb works fine on another laptop / desktop. Most of the time it appears if usb / cd is not configured as first boot device & boot sequence is changed while booting using Function key.
This is the error I usually get on my HP Compaq 6710b laptop.

Following is the only solution seems working.

In BIOS setup enable USB / CD device as first boot device.

Or try changing boot device order.

This is all you need to do, now you’ll be able to boot using Live CD which was throwing error on same hardware.

this is intermediate problem.

    I found this blog post the other day when I ran into this issue trying to install CentOS 6 from a USB drive onto an HP L160 machine. The boot order issue seemed iffy to me. Like someone else mentioned, if I can boot to the USB drive, obviously the order is correct… and even if it was the last option, it should still seen the correctly attached hard drives inside the machine.

    My fix didn’t have anything to do with the boot order. While I could boot into CentOS 5.6 from USB, there is no easy install-to-HDD option… so I found that Ubuntu 11.04 LTS would boot from my USB drive and install to the hard drives just fine. After installing U11.04LTS, I rebooted again to CentOS 6 from USB, worked like a charm and let me install to the hard drives right from the desktop as expected.

    I now have CentOS 6 on my machine no problems, and it only added maybe 20 minutes to the whole install time, between booting U11.04LTS, installing it, and rebooting to CentOS 6.

    I have the same problem with HP desk-top: Amd 64 athlon processor, 2GB memory and 40 G SATA hard drive:
    Fedora 13 and 14 and Ubuntu 10 can not install with the same message:
    no root device found.
    booting has failed, sleeping forever.
    In fact booting process starts from CD and this message shows after roughly a minute. I see fedora splash screen with load indicator and Ubuntu text with flashing dots at the bottom at first but than everything stops and those two lines appear at the top of the screen.
    CentOS 5 installs or at least it appears that it installs but system can not boot after cd is removed.
    Free BSD version 8, Opensolaris, and Solaris 11 express install with no problems.
    Boot sequence order was the same for all of them. Optical drive first, hard drive second and anything else disabled.

    I found a solution that worked for me. I was getting the same error (no root device found, sleeping forever) on Fedora 14 KDE spin. I used unetbootin to install to a usb flash drive and was able to boot from that into Fedora 14. I am currently installing now.

    no root device.

    Anyone knows the solution for this?

    I’ve changed the boot order in the BIOS and still get the same error. I’ve also tried another fix where to change the boot option to root=live:LABEL=FEDORA still not working guess I’ll have to keep searching.

    With each new fedora release i get excited, and with each new release i am unable to install. Lets see if this time it will work.

    I don’t understand this solution. How would you be booting from a USB device or CD if they weren’t already selected as the first boot device in the BIOS setup?

      In branded hardware you can change booting sequence using function key. HDD may be configured as first boot device to reduce boot time. I have updated post accordingly.

    Is “FC 13″ a correct abbreviation? I thought they dropped the C = “Core” somewhere around version 9?

      they call it release.
      but rpm still appears as fc13
      e.g kernel-2.6.33.4-95.fc13.i686
